Zapgo meets EV Minister at the Department for Transport

Last week, Zapgo was very pleased to visit the Department for Transport to meet Keir Mather MP, Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation, whose portfolio includes responsibility for electric vehicles.

Representing Zapgo, Alex Puffette, from our Strategy Team, met with the Minister to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing charge point operators as the UK’s charging network continues to expand.

Removing barriers

Zapgo’s discussion with Keir Mather MP focused on how we can work together to remove the practical barriers involved in delivering public charging infrastructure. Our team reiterated that private sector investment was crucial to enabling the swift rollout of EV charging across the country and we explored ways in which government policy could create a supportive environment to give investors the confidence to invest and drivers the confidence to adopt.

Zapgo’s growing site portfolio

The Minister was pleased to hear more about Zapgo’s growing portfolio of sites at destination locations in areas of the country underserved by existing charging infrastructure: from farm shops in Somerset to coffee shops and convenience stores in Scotland – and Zapgo has agreed to keep the Minister updated as more new sites come online.

A pivotal moment for the sector

Our meeting at the Department for Transport comes at a pivotal time for the EV charging sector: more than 2 million EVs are now on UK roads while the UK government is targeting 300,000 chargers across the UK by 2030. Everywhere you look, you can see growing consumer confidence in making the switch to EVs, and recent fuel price shocks have only accelerated this upswell in public support for the EV transition.

Collaboration between industry and policymakers

In order to ensure public charging delivery keeps up with the growth in EV sales, close collaboration between government, charge point operators, local authorities and local businesses is becoming more important than ever. A unified approach between different stakeholders is the only way to ensure that chargers are delivered in the right locations and at the pace that’s needed and we look forward to working with the Minister and his department to deliver this.

We welcome all opportunities to engage constructively with policymakers from across the political spectrum to deliver initiatives that help accelerate the rollout of rapid and reliable charging infrastructure in the places it’s needed most – and we’ll be sharing further updates on this in due course.
