David Mundell MP was given a tour of the site by Ross Mabon, Zapgo’s Chief Operating Officer, with the pair also trying out the charger and seeing how straightforward it is for drivers to charge and pay.

During the visit, David heard how the site has been used by local residents and visitors since opening, and discussed the role reliable public charging can play as more drivers across Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale move to electric vehicles.

Supporting the local community

Zapgo opened the Lochmaben site in October 2025 to strengthen rapid charging provision in an area that had previously been underserved. Before the site opened, drivers faced a journey of around 15–20 minutes to reach the nearest alternative rapid charger.

Located at Tesco Express, the site reflects Zapgo’s focus on placing charging infrastructure at convenient local destinations where drivers can make practical use of their charging time, whether shopping for everyday essentials or stopping as part of a longer journey.

Demand for public charging continues to grow across the constituency, where there are now more than 1,700 registered electric vehicles, alongside drivers travelling into and through the area from elsewhere in the country.

About the site

The site features a 200kW ultra-rapid charger serving two bays, enabling vehicles to add significant range in a short stop. Drivers also benefit from 24-hour CCTV, contactless payment and an easy-to-use charging interface.

“I was pleased to hear just how well used Zapgo’s charger unit at Lochmaben Tesco is and about the company’s exciting plans to support electric vehicle owners in rural areas like ours. Some people locally have been concerned that if they purchase an electric vehicle they will have issues charging it away from home, but the Lochmaben facility shows it can be done quickly and easily if the right infrastructure is in the right place.” – David Mundell MP

“It was a pleasure to welcome David Mundell MP to Zapgo’s charging site at Tesco Express in Lochmaben. As increasing numbers of his constituents make the switch to EVs, our site is enabling residents, shoppers and visitors to charge their vehicle quickly before getting on with their day. We look forward to continuing to support the constituents of Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale over the coming years.” – Ross Mabon, Chief Operating Officer at Zapgo
